DOCs are another emissions control technology used in diesel engines. These catalysts promote the oxidation of harmful pollutants, such as carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC), converting them into less harmful substances like carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor. DOCs can reduce emissions of these pollutants, enhancing the overall environmental performance of diesel engines.
SCR systems employ a different approach to emissions control by reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. These systems inject a precisely dosed Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), typically consisting of urea and water, into the exhaust stream. The DEF reacts with NOx in the presence of a catalyst, typically a SCR catalyst, converting the NOx into nitrogen gas and water vapor. SCR systems offer significant NOx reduction, making them an effective technology for meeting stringent emissions regulations.
The combined use of DPFs, DOCs, and SCR systems has become common in modern diesel engines. Together, these technologies work synergistically to control multiple pollutants and meet increasingly stringent emissions standards. They provide a comprehensive approach to reducing particulate matter, CO, HC, and NOx emissions, helping to improve air quality and minimize the environmental impact of diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
