At Dale’s Super Store we have round and square EGR Coolers for your Powerstroke, Cummins, Duramax, semi trucks, Sprinter vans and more. Most EGR coolers do not come with gaskets, which is why we carry a large selection of quality gaskets which can be purchased separately, along with OEM replacement and upgrade kits for one-stop shopping.

Diesel Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems play a vital role in reducing emissions and improving the environmental performance of diesel engines. The EGR system is designed to reduce the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) during combustion by recirculating a portion of the engine's exhaust gas back into the intake system.

EGR systems typically consist of an EGR valve, EGR cooler, and associated piping and control systems. The EGR valve regulates the flow of exhaust gas entering the intake manifold, allowing precise control over the recirculation rate. The EGR cooler is responsible for reducing the temperature of the exhaust gas before it enters the intake system, improving its effectiveness.

More About EGR Cooler Replacements / Upgrades

The EGR system works by diverting a controlled amount of exhaust gas, containing inert gases, carbon dioxide, and small amounts of pollutants, back into the engine's combustion chambers. By introducing this exhaust gas into the air/fuel mixture, the oxygen concentration in the combustion process is reduced, resulting in lower peak combustion temperatures. This, in turn, helps to minimize the formation of NOx, which is a major contributor to air pollution and smog.

Implementing an EGR system in diesel engines requires careful calibration and integration with other engine management systems. The EGR flow rate must be optimized to achieve the desired balance between NOx reduction and maintaining engine performance and efficiency. Engine control modules (ECMs) play a crucial role in monitoring and controlling EGR system operation, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with emissions regulations.

While EGR systems have proven effective in reducing NOx emissions, they can introduce certain challenges. The recirculated exhaust gas can contain particulate matter and carbon deposits that may accumulate in the intake system over time. This can lead to carbon buildup, affecting engine performance and requiring periodic maintenance and cleaning of the EGR system components.
