The EGR system used on diesels is intended to recirculate spent exhaust back into the engine's intake manifold in controlled amounts based on the engine operating temperature and the position of the EGR valve. The problem arises when diesel exhaust gasses that are full of soot build up over time and cause excessive operating temperatures, reduced engine power, and failed EGR valves. The EGR Cooler is there to reduce the EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) of the gasses that are recirculated back through the intake system, but most factory solutions rarely last.
