Description

The Hamilton Cams 188/220 Cast Camshaft is engineered for 1989-2018 Dodge Ram Cummins 5.9L and 6.7L engines, providing enhanced mid-range power and reduced EGTs by 200-300°F. Designed for versatility, this camshaft is suitable for daily drivers, drag racing, and stock class pulling.

Features:

  • RPM Range: Optimized performance from 1700 to 4000 RPM, improving responsiveness and efficiency.
  • Heat Reduction: Lowers exhaust gas temperatures by 200-300°F, enhancing engine durability.
  • Compatibility Requirements: Drop-in design requires specific piston protrusion and valve face depth; consult clearance guidelines for optimal fit.
  • Installation Recommendations: New lifters are advised during installation; ensure proper lubrication and priming to avoid break-in issues.

Drop-In Cam Fitment Requirements:

  • 12v Engines:
    • Piston protrusion: ≤ 0.025"
    • Valve face depth: ≥ 0.055" with a standard head gasket
    • Intake centerline: 99°
  • 1998–2002 24v Engines:
    • Piston protrusion: ≤ 0.025"
    • Valve face depth: ≥ 0.038" with a standard gasket
  • 2003-2018 Engines:
    • Piston protrusion: 0.018"
    • Valve face depth: ≥ 0.038" with a standard gasket
  • Clearance Adjustments:
    • If piston-to-valve clearance is insufficient, use an oversized head gasket or cut valve reliefs.
    • Always verify clearances, even for drop-in cams (a clearance calculator can assist).
  • Steel Cam Version:
    • Requires at least two bushings in the cam tunnel to prevent wear on the cast iron block.
    • Always install new lifters when replacing a cam.

Break-In Instructions:

  • Preparation:
    • Apply a liberal amount of high-quality assembly lube to the cam and oil pump.
    • Prime the oil filter and ensure the oil system is pressurized before startup.
  • Oil Priming Procedure:
    • Disconnect the fuel system.
    • Use the starter to spin the engine until oil pressure is confirmed or oil reaches the rocker arms (limit starter use to 10 seconds at a time).
  • Initial Start:
    • Run the engine at 1200–1500 RPM for 5 minutes once oil pressure is confirmed, then shut it down.
    • Adjust valves after the initial run.
  • Additional Tips:
    • If a head re-torque or “hot-torque” is required, complete it before setting the valve lash to ensure accurate adjustment.
    • Change the oil after the break-in procedure to maintain optimal engine health.
