Hamilton Cams 178/208 Towing Cam | 07-C-178/208 | 1989-2018 Dodge RAM Cummins 5.9L / 6.7L
Description
The Hamilton Cams 178/208 Towing Camshaft is engineered for 1989-2018 Dodge RAM Cummins 5.9L and 6.7L engines, providing exceptional low-end performance, improved fuel economy, and quicker turbo response. Designed with a short duration and wide lobe separation, this camshaft enhances drivability, making it ideal for towing and daily driving, especially in high-altitude environments.
Features:
- RPM Range: Idle to 3,000 RPM, offering strong low-end torque for towing applications.
- Fuel Efficiency: Improves fuel economy by 2-3 MPG with quicker turbo spool.
- EGT Reduction: Lowers exhaust gas temperatures by 200-300 degrees, helping with engine cooling and durability.
- Compatibility: Works well with larger turbos or heads with larger valves and ports for enhanced response.
This camshaft is a reliable upgrade for drivers seeking better efficiency without sacrificing performance, especially for moderate street trucks and heavy-duty towing. It ensures optimal operation at lower RPMs while maintaining compatibility with common rail engines and larger turbo setups.
Drop-In Cam Fitment Requirements:
- 12v Engines:
- Piston protrusion: ≤ 0.025″
- Valve face depth: ≥ 0.055″ with a standard head gasket
- Intake centerline: 99°
- 98–02 24v Engines:
- Piston protrusion: ≤ 0.025″
- Valve face depth: ≥ 0.038″ with a standard gasket
- 03 and Up Engines:
- Piston protrusion: 0.018″
- Valve face depth: ≥ 0.038″ with a standard gasket
- Clearance Adjustments:
- If minimum piston-to-valve clearance is not met, use an oversized head gasket or cut valve reliefs.
- Check clearances even with drop-in cams (use the clearance calculator for convenience).
- Steel Cam Version:
- Install at least two bushings in the cam tunnel to prevent steel from wearing into the cast iron block.
- New lifters are always recommended when changing a cam.
Break-In Procedure:
- Preparation:
- Apply a liberal amount of quality assembly lube to the cam.
- DO NOT start the engine without oil pressure.
- For new engines, apply assembly lube to the oil pump and prime the oil filter.
- Oil Change:
- Change the oil after completing the break-in procedure.
- Pre-priming the filter and oil system ensures faster oil pressure buildup.
- Priming Procedure:
- Disconnect the fuel system.
- Use the starter to spin the engine until oil pressure is visible or oil flows from the rocker arms (limit each attempt to 10 seconds).
- Initial Run:
- After verifying oil pressure, start the engine and run it at 1200–1500 rpm for five minutes, then shut it down.
- Adjust the valves after the initial run to ensure proper settings.
- Additional Tips:
- If re-torquing or “hot-torquing” the head, complete it before adjusting valves since it affects valve lash settings.
- After break-in, enjoy the improved airflow!
