Engine Components  - Diesel Cylinder Heads

Diesel cylinder heads are crucial engine components that seal combustion chambers and house key parts such as the valvetrain. They control gas flow, contain valves and glow plugs, injectors and more. Advancements in design and materials enhance performance. Diesel cylinder heads can withstand high temperatures and pressures.

More About Diesel Cylinder Heads

Diesel Cylinder Head Teardown and Rebuild

The steps involved in rebuilding a diesel engine head, here is an example of a Ford 6.0 Powerstroke 32 valve head. We have broken in down in 10 easy to consume steps.

  1. Disassemble and Clean: The cylinder head is completely disassembled, and components are cleaned using thermal and shot blasting methods. During this process, a visual inspection is performed to identify any damage, such as head gasket leaks.
  2. Inspection and Measurement: The thickness of the head needs to be measured; in this case, factory specifications are 3.740". Cylinder heads that are at least 3.728” thick after machining are within serviceable metrics. Anything thinner than this will require additional adjustments, such as valve tip length and injector tip depth check.
  3. Magnafluxing & Pressure Testing for Cracks: The head needs to be pressure tested and magnafluxed to detect cracks. Some cracks will be removed during machining, while others will require further repair using techniques like Lock-N-Stitch repair pins. Cylinder heads must be re-tested to ensure there are no coolant or fuel leaks.
  4. Fuel Injector and Glow-Plug Sleeve Replacement: OEM fuel injector and glow-plug sleeves are replaced to ensure proper sealing and performance.
  5. Valve and Spring Inspection: Valves are inspected for wear, and valve stems and springs are measured for reuse. Any components out of spec are replaced.
  6. Machining: The cylinder head is machined to install new oil-retaining valve guides, hardened exhaust valve seats, and intake valve seat inserts. The deck surface is machined flat using a precision CBN resurfacing mill to ensure a proper fit for the MLS gasket.
  7. Doing the Valve Job: A precision valve job is performed using a machine like a Rottler SG9MTS machine or similar. This ensures accurate valve-to-seat alignment. Valve recession and stem height are set to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  8. Machining O-Ring Grooves: Grooves for O-rings are machined into the head deck, and a stainless steel wire is installed after valve assembly.
  9. Final Cleaning and Assembly: After machining, the head goes through a hot acid jet-wash and final cleaning. It is then assembled with new valve seals, and O-ring wires are installed. The head is painted with high-temperature corrosion-resistant paint and prepared for shipping.
  10. Final Inspection: The diesel cylinder head needs to have a final inspection to prove all components are correctly installed. After this, the finished head should be ready for use. This process certifies the cylinder head is properly remanufactured to meet or exceed OEM factory specifications, extending the life and performance of the engine for future generations.
